Funded in 2001,
Supporters for Mental Health (SUMH) is a non-profit, non-governmental
organization, implementing in Mental Health Services in Cambodia for over
10 years. Siem Reap province is selected as a target side of its Mental Health
projects accordance with a general survey of this area and. SUMH provides two
domain purposes for the first period of initial project; Firstly, organizes Psychosocial
Rehabilitation Specialist Training, Secondly, creates Community Rehabilitation
Program, which is suitable to the rural in Cambodia.
With PSR training
program in the past, six people have successfully completed two years training
upon on the guidelines of Ministry of Health and an active cooperation by National
Program for Mental Health. And now those
advantage human resources remain their working in psychiatric wads of Siem Reap
Referral Hospital
and organization of SUMH.
And there
after, Mental Health
Rehabilitation Center
was built in Siem
Reap Referral
Hospital compound, became
a key place to contribute helpful rehabilitation activities to mentally ill
patients and families, and where the community work plans are gathered to
implement to the based-community population.
In June
2010, under cooperation between Siem Reap Health Department and Supporters for
Mental Health a new psychiatric ward in Ankor Chum Referral Hospital
has started mental health care service, where the hospital system just put into
public health services in early 2009 for local population. At the first years, SUMH
supported two main working processes; psychotropic drugs and clinical human
resources (psychiatrist and psychiatrist nurses). And the years after drugs
supplies are taken a responsible by Ministry of Health, as SUMH consumes
sustainable human resources.
SUMH is the
first active mental health services provider on Mental Health Rehabilitation
Activities and Community Mental Health Awareness Promotion in Siem Reap
province since 2001. The overall missions are the following

vulnerable people to achieve adequate MH care services.

provide base-community psychosocial rehabilitation activities.
▪ to
promote community mental health awareness.
▪ to
support psychosocial rehabilitation practitioners and MH specialists training
program
